Tübingen is a university town in Baden-Württemberg, Southwestern Germany, situated 30 km south of Stuttgart on a ridge between the Neckar and Ammer rivers. As of 2014, about 1 in 3 people living here is a university student. Just north of the city is the Schönbuch, a densely wooded nature park. The Swabian Alb mountains rise 20 km to the southeast. The Ammer and Steinlach rivers discharge into the Neckar, which flows through the medieval old town. Large parts of the city are hilly. The area was probably first settled in the 12th millennium BC. The Romans left traces here in AD 85, when they built a Limes at the Neckar. Tübingen itself dates from the 6th or 7th century, when the region was populated by the Alamanni, a Germanic tribe.
